More Than Just Turtles…

A message of peace and hope, born from the devastation of the 1944 bombing and the 1997 earthquake. Water, bronze, and stone come together to celebrate the city’s resilience and its remarkable ability to rise again after so many hardships.

Ricordo del dolore umano di Ivan Theimer

This is a place where past and present converge, inviting visitors to pause and reflect. The sculpture, made up of many smaller pieces, is best admired slowly as you stroll along the iconic merchants’ street. It stands as a tribute to the victims and those who gave their lives for peace, as expressed in the inscription at its base: “Each of us builds the victory of peace”. Let’s all do our part.

Oxidised bronze plate applied to travertine and bardiglio marble slabs
cm 55×55

The stumbling stone is intended as a homage to Theimer’s work, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of its creation, 2004-2024. Hercules is only hinted at through a bronze silhouette. The slab is further enriched by the representation of a seascape in the background, with the sea made of Bardiglio marble and the cloudy sky made of Travertino marble. The presence of the sea is meant to be a reference to the Sicilian origins of the artist Santo Arizzi, author of the stumbling stone, who was also inspired by this sculpture for his training in architecture.
